Printing techniques

The following printing techniques are used for printing envelopes:
  • Offset (paper)
  • Digital printing (paper and plastic)
  • Hotfoil printing (plastic)
  • Flexo printing (plastic)
  • Rotogravure printing (plastic)

Offset

Offset is used in about 80% of printed matter in the Netherlands and is the most common printing technique in the Western world. The printing form has no relief; on the printing form, a difference in surface structure occurs in a photochemical process, so that the print image, the parts of the print form to be printed, can hold ink (= grease) and other parts can hold a 'film thin' layer of water and thus shed the ink. Offset pressure works on the principle that water (unprinted part) and grease (ink, printed part) repel each other.

Digital
print

Is mainly used for commercial printing in the sphere of direct marketing, partly due to the possibilities for personalization. The digital printing technique is developing strongly; areas of application (circulation / size) become commercially more attractive; the application is about 'breaking through'. The digital printing method sometimes appears to be a form of offset, but differs from this because the printing form is not produced in a photochemical process, but electronically. The printing forme is again directly controlled from a computer memory for each printing run.

Hot
foil

A special technique whereby the ink is applied to the packaging via a cliché or a stamp. The ink is transferred to the package by means of a foil manufactured on a roll and provided with a silver, gold or other standard color ink. The heated stamp is now removed from the ink on the foil and applied directly to the surface to be printed. This technique can already be used with a decrease of 100 pieces.

Flexo
print

Flexo printing stems from what started a few centuries ago as a simple stamping technique. Use is made here of a flexible pressure plate (in most cases of silicone). Because of this flexibility, the printing plate adapts itself to the material to be printed. This makes it possible to print different types of material such as plastic, cardboard and foils. The accuracy and quality of the flexo printing has become so high that the quality of offset and gravure is approached.

Roto
engraving
print

This technique is characterized by the use of a printing plate in which small recessed recesses hold the ink. In intaglio printing, dots are etched in a cylinder (printing plate). Then the entire shape is inked with a very thin ink. The excess ink is scraped away with a squeegee. The material can only take the ink out of the pans. The machining of the cylinders is relatively expensive. However, the high speeds of this rotation technique make it suitable for large print runs and for multi-color printing. Small color nuances (real halftones) are also well represented by the different depths of the grid napkins.
